5G, New Materials, Robots: the 2022 Winter Olympics "Armed" by Science and Technology

It is also the first speed skating venue in the history of the Winter Olympics to use carbon dioxide as refrigerant. Ice is the key facility for venue operation. The national speed skating hall has the largest all ice design in Asia, with an area of nearly 12000 square meters. Using carbon dioxide transcritical direct cooling ice making technology to make ice on such a large ice surface has no precedent in the previous winter Olympic speed skating venues.   

The carbon dioxide transcritical direct cooling ice making technology enabled by the "Ice Ribbon" this time makes the ice temperature very uniform, the maximum temperature difference can be controlled within 0.5 degrees Celsius, and the ice hardness is always consistent, which helps athletes create sports results.

 Compared with traditional refrigeration methods, carbon dioxide refrigeration can improve the energy efficiency of ice making by 30%. According to the calculation of researchers, the carbon dioxide ice making system of the national speed skating hall can save about 1.8 million kwh of electricity every year. The refrigeration system takes away the heat under the ice layer through refrigerant or refrigerant to realize the rapid cooling of the ice field. Generally, the heat taken away is directly discharged into the outdoor environment. However, here, engineers realize recycling by means of scientific and technological means, and can provide 70 ℃ hot water for domestic hot water, dehumidification and regeneration.

"Green Electricity" helps carbon neutralization in Winter Olympics

The Beijing Winter Olympics will be fully carbon neutral. In terms of transportation, the use of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has become the highlight of this winter Olympic Games, becoming a "Hydrogen Energy Show". The Winter Olympic Games will demonstrate and operate more than 1000 hydrogen energy vehicles, equipped with more than 30 hydrogen refueling stations, which is the largest fuel cell vehicle demonstration in the world.

During the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, 212 "100% Made in China" hydrogen fuel cell buses provide hydrogenation services through five "100% Green Hydrogen" hydrogenation stations. It is expected to realize the fuel saving benefit of 0.28 liters per kilometer per vehicle, with a total fuel saving of about 9.6 tons, a carbon reduction benefit of 0.75 kg per kilometer per vehicle and a total carbon emission reduction of about 30 tons. Energy saving and clean energy vehicles account for almost 100% of passenger cars and more than 80% of all vehicles.

From catering to security, robots are everywhere in the Winter Olympics 

Robots shine brightly in the Winter Olympics, including catering robots, distribution robots, disinfection robots, etc. 

The smart restaurant developed by Country Garden Qianxi robot group covers an area of 5400 square meters and can accommodate more than 1700 people at the same time. Robot elements are everywhere. Some robots are responsible for stir-fry and others are responsible for making pot rice. You can eat Chinese or Western food. After the robot completes the meal, the meal delivery robot will use the cloud rail transmission system in the air to send the meal to the location of the ordering person.

The double arm cooperative robot "Dabai" of Beijing Orion Star Technology Co., Ltd. incarnates as a "Master" of coffee. Dabai is composed of two six axis cooperative mechanical arms. The left and right mechanical arms can start at the same time and can accurately perform various actions. A series of coffee making processes such as taking beans, weighing, taking water, watering and brewing can be completed in only 4 minutes.

After some modular transformation and testing, the distribution robot provided by Ninebot Limited can provide indoor patrol and security services in the Winter Olympic venues, monitor and manage the situation in the venues in real time, and also provide goods distribution services for people.

Intelligent disinfection robot equipped with excimer disinfection lamp.  

Some full-time disinfection robots work silently in the venues. Different from ordinary disinfection robots, when facing the surface of complex objects, the disinfection robots in the Winter Olympic Games can not only adaptively recognize the shape of objects, but also independently plan the disinfection trajectory to achieve efficient and accurate disinfection, which is more suitable for working in an unmanned environment. The Institute of automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is equipped with excimer disinfection lamps for disinfection robots, which emit 222 nm ultraviolet rays to disinfect the irradiated air without causing harm to the human body.  

High speed camera and Beidou navigation assist athlete training   

In the Winter Olympic Games, AI, high-speed camera and Beidou navigation technology have been widely used for athlete training.

For example, the fast feedback system of biomechanics of ski jumping. In the past, coaches mainly photographed the athletes' movement track with the help of ordinary cameras and image shooting equipment, watched and analyzed afterwards, and put forward improved training plans. By setting up multiple high-speed high-definition cameras to collect three-dimensional motion data, AI can automatically identify the position of each joint point of athletes, and calculate important indexes such as take-off pedal extension distance, take-off joint angle and take-off vertical speed, so as to realize three-dimensional motion capture and analysis of ski jumping.

For sports such as figure skating, there are more evaluation criteria. AI system helps athletes improve the standardization and beauty of posture through three-dimensional skeleton node detection and posture estimation. The visualization of 3D model of sports target provides a clear sports model for athletes' technical analysis.   

Beidou navigation digital snow field feedback system uses Beidou navigation system to realize the digitization of field information and athletes' sliding track. It can feed back the information such as flying height, shooting speed, take-off angle, displacement information and data comparison.  

5G cloud broadcasting "Big Test" behind UHD broadcasting   

5G and cloud broadcasting technology were adopted on a large scale in this winter Olympic Games, becoming a training ground for sports broadcasting technology in the future. At present, 5G signal has covered the competition venues, supporting facilities, Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-speed Railway, Beijing-Congli Expressway and other transportation trunk lines of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.  

The advantage of 5G cloud broadcasting is that broadcasters do not need to transport bulky and expensive broadcasting equipment to the site of the Winter Olympic Games, transfer the broadcasting guidance, production, editing, subtitles and other work from the traditional broadcasting car to the cloud, complete the production and broadcasting process in the cloud, and truly realize the high picture quality and low-cost broadcasting of Olympic events.

The Winter Olympics will be broadcast in 4K Ultra HD format for the first time, and some important events will be broadcast in 8K format. In terms of the duration of the event, the overall duration is 1000 hours per month, and the content of broadcast content will reach 6000 hours, which is the largest scale of previous winter Olympics. OBSCloud, a cloud broadcasting platform, is a broadcasting technology jointly created by Alibaba and the Olympic Broadcasting Service Company. It was used for the first time at the Tokyo Olympic Games to provide cloud broadcasting support for global broadcasting institutions. It is also the first time in the history of the Olympic Games to use cloud computing to support global broadcasting.

The high-speed railway 5G ultra-high definition studio launched during the Winter Olympics is the first time in the world to build an ultra-high-definition live broadcasting studio on a high-speed railway train with a speed of 350 kilometers per hour, relying on 5G technology, so as to realize the long-term and stable transmission of ultra-high-definition signals. China Unicom deployed a 3.5G 200M network for the whole network of Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, and introduced 5G signals into the vehicle body, which is the first in the world.

The world's first 8K + 5G UHD video full service broadcasting vehicle. 

During the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, when spectators watch short track speed skating and figure skating events, users will enjoy clearer pictures and more colorful viewing angles. The world's first 5G + 8K UHD video full-service broadcasting vehicle completed by UPTC / coordination center will undertake the broadcasting services of these two events. The broadcasting vehicle and technical support service team will cooperate with China Media Group to produce 8K public signals for the Beijing Winter Olympic short track speed skating and figure skating events. It is expected that the actual broadcast of the event will last from February 4 to 20, with a total of 17 consecutive days. The total broadcast time is about 46 hours, and the total material recording time is more than 230 hours.

According to the characteristics of ice and snow sports in the Winter Olympic Games, the self-developed 8K + VR live broadcast system of Winter Olympic events and 6DOF VR technology are used to demonstrate and broadcast ice and snow sports. Users can realize VR live viewing through mobile phones, VR helmets and large TV screens.

It is designed according to the body characteristics of Chinese athletes, mainly involving short track speed skating, speed skating, alpine snow skating and other racing events. The drag reduction rate of many race clothes developed is more than 10%.

In terms of color and collocation, the competition clothes choose more beautiful colors to reflect the sense of design. In addition, through the psychological evaluation of visual factors such as color analysis and pattern, combined with 3D simulation, this paper studies the impact of clothing visual factors on competitive evaluation.
